Q: First tell us something about yourself?
My name is Jaklen Alkyan – I am an Assyrian Christian born in Iran. I left my home in 1989 and emigrated to Germany as a refugee and then settled in the United States in 1993.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from California State University, Stanislaus, as well as a Master’s Degree in Education from University of Phoenix. Besides enjoying my career as a well-traveled Human Resources professional, I indulge in creative pursuits–—art, interior design, photography, and had, for many years, dreamed of becoming a writer.
When not at my computer working and writing, I love spending time with family and friends. Especially my three beautiful nieces who bring me so much joy.
Q: How and when your journey started as a writer?
After sharing my life with my lovebird, Lucy, My dream became reality and my journey as an author began. Having a deep affection for pets and children, I decided to combine these two well-loved subjects in my writing, the result being A Lovebird Named Lucy as my literary debut, and the just published Audrey and Lucy’s Backyard Adventure as my second book.
Q: When did you write your first story? Is it published or not?
A Lovebird Named Lucy was published in March 2020 – available on Amazon.
Q: Tell us something more about your books?
A Lovebird Named Lucy is based on a true story. It’s the tale of how we met; how she was lost, then found. It tells of our deep bond and the community effort to find her and bring her home after 6 days. I decided to write it from a child’s perspective, for children to enjoy.
Audrey and Lucy’s Backyard Adventure – Audrey and her beautiful lovebird, Lucy, love their backyard adventures. There’s so much to see, do and discover. What they discover is very hungry bunnies, birds and ladybugs looking for food. In this story of caring and sharing, Audrey feeds her friends and comes up with ways to make sure they’re fed every day. This second book, featuring engaging illustrations and the familiar, loveable characters of Audrey and her lovebird, Lucy, will delight readers of all ages!
Q: Why do you choose kids as your reader ? is there any specific reason?
I believe children, today more than ever, need gentle reminders of what is good and soothing to their souls. I aspire to create simple worlds that children can relate to, and feel safe in.
