Q: First tell us something about yourself.
I’m a wife and mom of two with a love of books, adventure and creating beautiful moments. While my life is centered around my family, I find great joy in pursuing my personal hobbies and interests including art, baking and culture studies.
Q: How and when did your journey start as a writer?
I’ve always enjoyed writing, starting formally in high school as an editor of my school’s newspaper! From there, I took many creative writing courses in college and during my study abroad placement throughout Europe, I started a blog about my experiences. After graduating, I picked up my blogging chops again and launched The Sweet Life in Carolina, a lifestyle blog following my 20-something ramblings from dating, to recipes, my wedding journey and more. It opened so many fun doors including some features with much bigger blog audiences. In 2024, I wrote my first book, These Are The Days, inspired by my life as a stay at home mom with my daughter. I wanted to showcase the softness and intentionality of black motherhood specifically.
Q: Tell us something more about your book.
In 2020 I left my job that I absolutely loved as a nonprofit director to focus my time with my new daughter. A tough decision for sure but it ended up being the best choice for our new family. I feel extremely fortunate to have been there for all the little moments and “firsts” for her while being able to support my husband’s career goals as well. I wanted to capture all the adventures, firsts, memories and moments we had in her first few years and writing a book seemed like the perfect way to have a touchstone for her that can also inspire and represent other mothers. In working with my illustrators, it was important to me to capture black mothers in different hairstyles, clothing and styles so all could seem themselves. It’s a project I’m very proud of.
Q: How did these stories and characters come to your mind?
My characters are based on my daughter and myself. My hope is that mothers and children can see themselves and their experiences through the book as well.
Q: Do you want to leave any message for your readers?
Go after all the goals you have! Write the book, take the class, make the new friend…even if you have to “do it scared”. You’ll be glad you did!
