Q: First tell us something about yourself.
Hi, I’m Sophie Jones-Tinsley (also known as Sophie JT). I’m 29, West Yorkshire based and love all things education. I think learning, reading, and developing our minds is the best thing a person can do. A saying I love and live by is “If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room!”
Q: How and when did your journey start as a writer?
I started writing my children’s book series in 2023 and have written 5 books but have only published the first book, so far. “Gugglewump: A day in the life of an archaeologist” is the first in an A-Z series of different careers, suitable for children aged 5 to 11. I have a background in Primary and Higher Education and Diversity and Inclusion, and through this I noticed a lack of children’s books that explore the wide range of careers available. Children often dream of being astronauts, doctors, or lawyers—roles that can be difficult to access and usually require a degree. I wanted to show children from all backgrounds that there are many exciting, meaningful jobs out there, and that it is important to find joy and passion in what you do. I also wanted to teach children about the career-specific skills and vocabulary related to the different roles so that there is an element of education there but taught in a fun and engaging way – hence the vocabulary list at the back of the book!
I also noticed that there is a lack of gender-neutral characters in children’s books which needs to improve, coupled with the fact that there are unconscious biases around who can do specific roles – when you think of a doctor or a nurse was gender comes to mind? Therefore, I wanted to write a book series which combats the societal idea that some jobs are male or female orientated and introduce a character who can represent whoever is reading the book. That is how Gugglewump was born—a fun, diverse character who represents curiosity, joy, and inclusion.
On a more personal note, the book came to life during my recovery from a serious road traffic accident in April 2024. Forced to take time off work, I found purpose in publishing this book. It became a positive focus during a very difficult time, and creating something meaningful from that experience has been incredibly rewarding. Gugglewump saved me, and I hope that others love the character as much as I do!
Q: How did these stories and characters come to your mind?
I honestly have no idea where the name or the character came from! I brainstormed a few character names (and they may appear in future books so watch this space!) but I settled on Gugglewump. It is funny to see people’s reaction to the name and I love how many people, both adults and children, have responded to how the character looks. Although I am biased, I agree that they are very cute!
