The Odd Squad
This book features four friends Maliyah, Jacob, Sarah, and Samson who struggle to finish their final fifth-grade year at St. Mary’s Primary School without being the main focus of teasing and bullying. The mean kids at school refer to them as “the odd squad.” Since first grade, this group of friends have had the task of trying to learn to be comfortable in their own skin because, in many ways, they were different from their schoolmates.
Lola is the smartest eight-year-old she herself has ever met. With her sharp mind, she approaches every situation logically and analyses the facts before making any decisions. Sometimes, she gets upset because some of the other kids make fun of her for being smart. Obviously, they’re just jealous. But it still hurts. Because Lola is so smart, she often finds it difficult to bond with children her own age as she finds it difficult to engage in creative play.
This book informs young black boys how important they are in this world, and that their emotions do not mean they are showing weakness. Also, this book is to inform them education is important, to never give up on themselves no matter what is thrown their way, and to know they can still be a cool kid with sincere emotions and phenomenal strength.
