The Troll That Was Misunderstood by Melanie Smith

This book encourages readers to embrace their differences and understand that there’s no need to hide or change just to fit in with what others consider normal. Told in playful verse, the story is designed to delight little ears and invite them to join in with the tale. It teaches young readers an important lesson: everyone needs a friend, and sometimes, a kind word or a bit of encouragement is all it takes to include someone who may feel left out. In this charming story, the creatures of the village learn that just because someone looks a little different or lives in an unusual place, it doesn’t mean they aren’t a good person. You’ll discover how a lonely troll’s life is transformed by a simple act of kindness. I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I enjoyed creating it.

I am the youngest of six siblings in a loving family of second-generation Jamaican Guatemalans. I am an anesthesiologist who has chosen to specialize in pediatric anesthesia. As a graduate of Yale Medical School of Medicine, I have extensive experience in academia and private practices including dental clinics and my love and joy of working with kids has allowed me the great fortune to participate in multiple volunteer medical missions internationally: Guatemala, Colombia, Thailand, and Kenya. I am always fascinated by kids innate ability to dive in and fully experience what is presented to them; Their attentiveness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn and fully experience life’s events are the foundation that inspires my intention to fuel their imagination with age-appropriate adventure to introduce them and help them prepare to receive anesthesia and other medical procedures.
